You are in: Home Greece Cyclades The Islands Myconos
Myconos Island
According to mythology the island took its name from Mykonos, the son of Anios who was descended from the god Apollo and the nymph Roio, daughter of Staphylos. Since the island was strewn with large stones the myth grew up that these boulders were the petrified giants that Heracles had once defeated. It has also been maintained that Ajax Locros was buried here after his ship sank upon its return from Troy, where he had raped the priestess Cassandra, daughter of Priam, in a temple of Athena. Wherever you stem you feel you are held captive.
Taken prisoner by the dazzling white which spreads over the houses, the courtyards, the windmills, the lowwalls, the lanes and the staircases. A few dabs of colour on the windows, doors and railings along with the flowers in their pots, emphasize even more the astonishing dominance of white in the town of Mykonos. When you first see Mykonos, you half close your eyes without thinking. The pure-white houses, the snow-white churches with their red or blue domes and the roofs next to the bare earth, reflect the light, /he abundant light spreading over and innundating everything. But this light is also warm and friendly. You can feel it embracing and caressing you: it is like being in a person's open aims who is looking after you and smiling at you. You become one with it, "you a ray in the lavish light as well", as the poet says. Mykonos has been called the "white island".
The houses, all nestled together, throw wide their arms in warm invitation under the Cycladic light which sings of the triumph of the sun. The wind will accompany you throughout your stay on the island. Rare the time you will not feel its touch, sometimes sweet and gentle, other times violent and threatening like an invincible force trying to keep you captive on the island. For years this was the main source of energy on the island. There is also the sea which gave me sea wnich gave life to the island and still does. Shipping was always the main driving force of the economy, supplemented by trade, fishing and the construction and repair of boats at its shipyards. These occupations kept the island alive for centuries.
The Market
The market of Mykonos is unique. All Chora is an endlessboutique as the little shops, the one right after the other, offer everything from folk art to masterpieces by artists of international repute. Frequently the area is used for the exhibition of the works of younger artists, which is why it is thought to be of particular importance. Because every year celebrities from the world of art pour through the island and thus the young creators can hope to have their talent recognized by somebody already acclaimed. There is a large variety of things one can buy but it is certain they will all be made with great taste and will be of extremely good quality without being too expensive. One can find handsome traditional items such as woven articles, knitwear and lace. One can admire the fine jewellery and folk art worked with loving care. One will sample the delicious almond cakes and the renowned 'kopanisti' cheese and will be left speechless by the vitality emitted by the paintings with subjects taken mainly from Mykonian nature and done by highly gifted artists. The search for souvenirs is a pleasure for the traveller. Even if his pocket is low on money, a small handmade windmill will still be enough to remind him of the unforgetable moments of high spirits he spent on the luminous island.
Petros the Pelican
An inseparable part of life on the harbour is the pelican, the island's mascot. It wanders through all the neighbourhoods but prefers the harbour and Alevkantra. It is so sweet and beloved it is looked after by everyone, locals and foreigners. Children and adults approach it in order to pet it or feed it and there is no lack of tourists to photograph it. It is also a typical feature of Mykonos life, another warm memory from the white island.
