You are in: Home Greece Crete Lasithi Prefecture Neapolis
Neapolis
During the Venetian Occupation, it was a small village called Kares. Later it was destroyed and when it was re-built, it was renamed Kainourio Horio or Neohori (New Village) and it maintained this name during the Turkish Rule.
In 1868 AD, Adosidis Kostis Pasha changed it into a town by creating parks, gymnasium (the only one in the prefecture until 1823), built the Seragaki (the residence of the Pasha that today is an orphanage) etc, and named it Neaopoli (new town). It was the capital of the prefecture until 1904, when Agios Nickolaos became the capital, as well as Episkopi Petras that until then it was in Areti and Fourni.
Nowadays, Neapoli is a beautiful commercial town with a proper town planning and modern buildings, such as the marvelous plants of Housekeeping School.
The imposing church of "Megali Panagia" with its beautiful square and garden that stands out in the plain of Mirabello. The church is consecrated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, to Agioi Deka (Ten Saints) and Agia Traida (Holy Trinity).
Southwest of Neapoli, in a distance of 1.5 km, there is the parish church of Kremasta from the 16th century, consecrated to Michael the Archangel.
