Milatos
Between the village and the beautiful sandy beach, which is situated 1000 m away, the Minoan village called Milatos was built. Milatos, who gave his name to the village, was a boy, according to the myth, that founded the famous colony of Militos that in 499 BC began the revolution of the Greek cities against the Persians. In the 3rd century BC, Milatos was destroyed by the Littious.
Near the village, on the side of a steep ravine, the historical cave of Milatos is located. It has eight entrances, 40 m long, in three horizontal tiers and is 2.100 square meters in size.
The cave does not possess any interesting stalagmites. However, it became famous because of the tragedy that took place here.
In 1823 AD, a large number of women and children hid in the cave in order to save themselves from The Turks, who surrounded and isolated them. When they were forced to give in after 15 days, Housein Bey slaughtered the old people and the few fighters that were together, and he sold the women as slaves in Egypt.
