Kritsa
The traditional village of Kritsa is located where the Byzantine church "Kera Panagia" is.
Its well-preserved frescos are among the best in Crete and are thought to be equal to Mistras, the Macedonian School and Agio Oros. They are exponent samples of painting and style of the 14th-15th century. The church is of three aisles, consecrated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, to Agia Anna and Agios Antonios. It is orthogonal with a dome and was built in threes stages, starting in 13th century until the middle of the 14th. Inside, there are many frescos. The Pantocrator, near the entrance, the Four Angels and many Saints, the Nativity, Agia Anna and Virgin Mary, the Ascension, Heaven and the Visitation of the sinners, are an artistic treasure from the 14th-15th century, when the Venetians dominated in Crete, however, they allowed the Cretans to build and decorate their churches freely.
The road continues and goes in the village Kritsa. The village is very beautiful, built amphitheatrically at the foot of Kastellos Mountain, with a marvelous view of the fraught with olive and almond trees plain that lies at its foot and the blue bay of Mirabello. It maintains lively the Cretan style, in not only its picturesque narrow streets and the two-storeyed white houses, with the fancy balusters in the windows, but also in the traditional occupations of the inhabitants and mainly of women who are occupied with weaving. The village has been inhabited since the Roman Period. It was destroyed by the Arabs but it was re-built in the 10th century. During the Venetian Occupation, it was the biggest village in Crete. Due to its participation in all the revolutions of the island, it suffered from much destruction.
Kritsa has many hagiographic Byzantine churches. One of the most remarkable, is, after Panagia Kera, the three-aisle church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) the Theologian, which is dated back to 2nd Byzantine Period, and constituted branch of Toblou Monastery. Jile Daesen choose this place in order to film his movie called "The one who must die", based on Kazantzakis' book "Hellenic Pathos". Additionally, it was here that the film "Christ is re-crucified" was created, another book of Kazantzakis.
Northern of the village, the ruins of Lato Etera are located, one of the oldest and most important cities of the island.
