Malia
Description
The original old village, with some traditional houses, remains a hundred yards or so inland from the very heavily trafficked main Shopping road. Intense tourism development has taken place from the main road down toward the seafront. No doubt about this being a cosmopolitan and extremely lively beach resort, one of the most popular and busy on Crete. Whilst one is close to Minoan history and archaeological digs hereabouts, it is the action-packed life that is sought and enjoyed by most of the visitors. A 24 hour day is lived to the full here.
Suitability
Young singles, couples, families, all fun/sun seekers who want full value for money especially if economy is an important factor.
Beaches
Certainly one of the best golden sandy beaches on the island. It stretches 2 or 3 miles or so and obviously is crowded in high season; very good bathing, but there is a need to be careful of the strong undertow at times during windy weather. Water sports are the order of the day, including water-skiing, windsurfing, pedalloes and parascending, with lessons for beginners. Sunbeds and umbrellas in the hundreds for hire.
Entertainment
Daytime: beach, beach, beach....
Nightlife: On the "strip" which is best part of a mile leading down from the main high street to the seafront, with a seemingly endless supply of pubs, bars and discotheques.
