You are in: Home Greece Crete Heraklion Prefecture Amnisos
Amnisos
These are two coastal touristic settlements, 7 km to the east of Heraklion. The inhabitants of Herakleion prefer them to spend their weekends. Karteros was the area where the Byzantine General Karteros landed in order to attack Arabs. Amnisos was Knossos sea port.
The sights are:
Ancient Amnissos where a minoan building was located. It is known as the Mansion of Amnisos murals - it is about the famous murals with the lilies. The building must have been the residence of some official of the Navy. The building was violently destroyed by a fire.
To the west of Paliohoras hill, a sanctum with a circular altar was also located. It is related to the worship of Zeus. The care of Elitheia, the goddess of childbirth, was discovered at the end of the 19th cent. Also known as the care of Nymphs, it is 1 km to the south of Amnisos. It had been a place of worship since the Neolithic Era until the 5th cent. B.C. A rectangular altar is situated in the center of the cave, around two stalagmites that look like human figures.
