Paleochora
Paleochora (Paliohora) is the second biggest town of southern Crete after Ierapetra .
The town located almost at the southwestern end of the island has aprox. 1.000 inhabitants .
The only way to reach Paleochora is from Hania , a trip of 75km of good asphalt road.
Regular public transportation is available for visiting Paleochora.
People are occupied in tourism, olive cultivation, fishing, and lately tomato production in green houses Traditional weaving is also developed .
There are many small beaches especially on the west side of the town. The city is a popular resort so there are many hotels, apartments, rooms to rent, restaurants, taverns, barsand a camping site.
During the summer small ships provide tour to the beaches around the island and other small villages like Sfakia, Sougia, Loutro and Elafonissi.
"Musical August" is a very popular cultural event, taking place every year from August 1st to 10th.
The old name of the town was Selino Kastelli because of the Venetian castle which was built in 1279 A.D. on the tip of the peninsula to control the two bays to the east and west. In 1539 the pirate Barbarossa conquered and destroyed it.
Today the castle has been renovated and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
